FALL ELLUJAH 2012 The Planning Stages

Ah, Fall, my favorite season of all.  Here in New England it just cant be beat: the weather is pleasant, the leaves are changing, and all manner of seasonal activities crop up every single weekend.  Ive already started planning activities for the family from apple picking to a trip to Salem.  My wife also loves the fall because pumpkin beer hits store shelves.  Weve started sampling a few and, giving the sites purview, will probably have more to say about them soon.  From now until Thanksgiving, I will actually be more excited about leaving the house than staying in it!

TMOH The 3T Challenge

Back In June of this year MittenNinja posted a challenge on his blog, Orion 6.  This challenge involves building a mech with no Travis bricks, Taps, or Pneuma-Ts.  While most of my catalog qualifies for this contest, I actually built some new mechs specifically for this.  Here they are.

The Jaeger.

The Ballista.

The Lion-Heart Mk.1

The Lion-Heart. Mk.2

I wasnt happy with the Lion-Heart Mk.1 but I really wanted to use the Lion mask part so I built another frame for it and disassembled -- rare for me -- the Mk.1.  The Lion-Heart Mk.2 is built on a AF frame by Zizy.  The Ballista is a modification of my Uriel frame.  The Jaeger is all new, built using techniques from the Block Chest and SpAAT frames.  I have more pictures over on MOCpages.

Newsbits The new 100 US Dollar Bill

Being the biggest denomination of US Dollar, the Federal Reserve recently changed the 100-US Dollar bill to include more security features to protect users from the counterfeit ones.
We were able to get a piece of this and checked the security features based on the internet. Heres a closer look of a few prominent features that we consumers/buyers of US Dollar need to know about the new 100-Dollar bill:
The most prominent security feature: Blue strip with the number 100 written on it

When placed under the light, you would notice that there is another writing by the left of  Bens Face

The huge 100 written at the back of the bill

When tilting the bill, you would notice that the bell inside this so-called jar changes color

There is this drawing by the white space at the front side;
The 100 written at the lower right side also changes color when you tilt the bill

You can also see the same drawing at the white space at the back of the bill

Lancer Project Working on the trunk

I decided to check my Lancers trunk to see how things are  back there.

And boy I am glad I did - see how dirty it is - there are spots where rust is starting to form.

Fortunately, most of it are just surface rust and mud (from the spare tire). But I have to be sure - to see how much damage I have to deal with - I decided to give it a thorough cleaning using some soap and water.

I decided to unplug the trunk light so that I dont accidentally drain the battery.

Now that all the dirt and grime has been removed - time to deal with the rust. See that bad spot there? Notice that my trunk had its fair share of rot in the past :(

It is really advisable to check up on your trunk once in a while. We used to  neglect the trunk and this has caused some parts of it to rust - I did a quick DIY job using some epoxy and paint a while back and fortunately it did the trick. The holes I patched up (circled blue) years ago included the trunks drain plug :(

Heres a close up of the rust I have to work on today :(

With the help of a wire brush - I removed as much rust as I can.

I sanded it down with some coarse sandpaper afterwards.

To prevent further rust damage, I applied several coats of rust converter and allowed it to cure overnight. I find it amusing to watch the converter at work - love the bubbles! :)

The following day - the rust converter has dried up and after a bit of sanding, Im ready to paint. I inspected the underside to make sure that rust hasnt eaten through the metal and Im glad that everything is pretty solid aside from the small hole you see in the picture..  I hope that this project has prevented this from spreading.

After several coats of paint - problem solved! (I know that this is just a temporary fix but it is better than doing nothing.. I really need to learn how to weld metal soon)

Now - everything looks neat and tidy! :)

The repairs I did years ago are still holding on - yey! (some closeup shots - I didnt bother sanding it down then - i figured no one will see it anyway hehe)

With the spare tire and other tools. TIP: It is advisable to clean your spare tire and tools before storing it. Keep everything dirt and mud free to avoid facing the same issues I had.

Since I was already at it - I decided to clean the trunk gutters as well - see how fresh it looks! :)

Still thinking if there are problem areas I might have missed with my Lancer..hmm..

Have You Tried Claiming Packages at the Post Office

It all started when I got a registry notice from the Philippine Postal Corporation.

Last June 2, 2011,  I got a registry notice from Philippine Postal Corporation. It's the first time I got one and I have no idea what that thing is about. After reading some vague instructions at the back of the card, I suspected that it was a package. Thing is, I didn't order anything.

Can you understand the writing written under "Claim at Window"?
4 days after, I decided to claim my "package". Problem is, the registry notice card I got was very vague that it wasn't even indicated where to claim it nor where the post office was. There was no address nor a phone number to contact to. In short, I didn't even know if this was the real thing or if this was just a scam.

Back part of the registry notice

The Epson Stylus Photo R3000 Printer Review

This article is brought to you
 photo eb76eaba-a5f0-45ed-bc95-340bc1f6b244.jpg

The Epson Stylus® Photo R3000 is clearly meant for photo enthusiasts or designers who needed quality professional printing. This seemingly big and bulky printer allows you to print up to A3 size. There is also a CD/DVD mounting tray that allows direct printing on the surface of discs.

The Epson UltraChrome® K3 Ink with Vivid Magenta helps to deliver vibrant blues and violets. The 9-colour pigment ink ensures greater colour accuracy and virtually no colour shifts.

It comes with a 2.5" LCD Panal that allows you to check the printer status - ink levels and menu settings at your convenience. In addition, it also displays on-screen instructions to show you how to feed special media such as fine art paper or board paper, as well as performing other operations.

Best of all, the R3000 can be shared within workgroups with its WIFI/Ethernet function. It support for USB 2.0 further expands connectivity options while WIFI access extends to new generation PEDs like the Apple iPad and iPhone.

I tried printing on A4 paper and it took a couple of minutes to print out. There is some slight noise when it first started processing the print request. However, once it pulled in the paper for printing, you barely hear anything.

I tested printing a couple photos with "dreamy effect", "HDR effect" and of normal shoot mode, and the final results is simply stunning! The colours are of such vibrancy that I cant wait to frame these up and used these for my room decoration. I believe these pictures after framed up, can serve as nice gifts to friends too.

Last but not least, thanks SAFRA for getting me to review this awesome printer!

The 50mm Perspective

Olympus Zuiko 25mm F2.8 pancake lens is probably one of the most underrated lenses from Olympus. The reasons are obvious. In todays craze of chasing wider and wider aperture, F2.8 is not exactly sounding very enticing for a prime lens. Add to the mediocre image quality of a standard grade lens, not matching the superior sharpness and technical perfection of the High Grade and Super High Grade brothers, this 25mm pancake lens may be regarded as a lens to accompany the original kit lenses for the entry level DSLR bodies, alongside 14-42mm and 40-150mm kit lenses.

However, I find myself loving this lens very much. I admit, it is nowhere as sharp as my beloved 50mm F2 macro. The control of narrow depth of field is disappointing, for an Olympus system having smaller sensor, the F2.8 does not produce much bokeh at all. There really is no wow factor using this lens, it is as ordinary as it can be, and one should not be expecting miracles. Nonetheless, learning that photography is not all about how sharp your images are, and how much bokeh you can squeeze into a photograph, this 25mm pancake lens provides me a refreshing perspective and different outlook towards my street shooting, allowing me to explore certain shooting styles apart from my usual execution. I must say, at a very low price point, being so small and compact the pancake lens is a no brainer.

All images in this entry were taken with Olympus DSLR E-5 and Zuiko 25mm F2.8 pancake lens.

I brought the pancake lens, mounted on my Olympus DSLR E-5 to Pudu, shooting alongside Luke Ding. I must say I enjoyed myself using this lens through and through. It is interesting, because I did not change lens at all, and just stayed with this 25mm all the time. Usually, I would switch between the 11-22mm (for wide angle shots) and 50mm F2 (for close up and tight portraits) on the streets. The 25mm pancake provided just enough wideness to cover limited wide angle shots, including some background and a few other subjects into one frame, while tight enough to have decent portrait shots. I am loving what this 50mm equivalent field of view (50mm on the 35mm format) can do. The photographs come out looking very natural indeed, and not forced to happen.
